If you have looked at pictures of what your parents wore to their first professional job, you are probably shocked by the styles, especially the styles that were designed for women. When women were first entering the workplace after the liberation movement, the idea behind woman’s fashion was to mimic a man’s wardrobe. Women wore ties, sports jackets, and slacks. The only difference was that the clothing that women wore was slightly more brightly colored than a mans.
In today’s fashion world, the man’s suit for women is making another appearance. However, while it used to be that women wore the outfits to appear more masculine and equal, the suits have been designed for women to look more attractive and sexy. The suits are only inspired by men’s clothing rather than being a mock up of masculine clothing. These new suits for women are unique in that they can sport cut off slacks and quarter-sleeve length jackets. A woman might wear a tie but the tie would be similar to one worn at the turn of the century. A simple, thin design that hangs around the neck rather than being tied.
Another fashion trend in clothing for the workplace is that appropriate clothing for women is getting a very feminine touch. Women no longer have to dress in masculine inspired clothing to be taken seriously within the workplace. Women have made their claim in the workplace and it is obvious that they are not going anywhere. Styles for women can be extremely feminine. Ruffles and lace are very popular. Accents like flowers and beaded designs are also becoming popular.
Another way that women’s fashion has changed over the years is in the style of shoes that are being worn in the workplace. Decades ago women wore basically one type of shoe: pumps. Pumps will always be fashionable in the workplace, but they are no longer the only choice of footwear. Women can wear boots, ankle boots, ballet flats, and any type of heel available.
